The 2017 annual Korean War Memorial Service, sponsored by the New Orleans Korean American Association (KAANO) will be held on June 25 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Square in Metairie. The ceremony will start with opening remarks by Sula Kim, followed by a presentation of colors by Jefferson Parish honor guards; national anthems of the United States and South Korea; Pledge of Allegiance by Sgt. Major Raymond Liss; invocation by Judge John C, Grout, Jr.; and welcome message by Insook Park, KAANO president.

The commemorative remarks will be delivered by Honorable Mike Yenni, Jefferson Parish president; Honorable Cynthia Lee-Sheng, Jefferson Parish Councilwoman at Large.

The speeches will be followed by presentation of wreath by Park, taps, and moment of silence. The closing remarks will be given by Sula Kim.

"The Korean War is, unfortunately referred to as the 'Forgotten War.' We come together each year to remember and honor the bravery men and women who fought in this horrific conflict," said William Langenstein III, Honorary Consul General of South Korea. "The Korean  War Memorial in Washington D.C. states 'Freedom is not Free.' We understand that phrase and will never forget the sacrifices of those who fought for the freedom some 66 years ago."
The gathering honors those who fought."It is a good thing for the living veterans of a forgotten war to come together to honor the fallen comrades and to remember what they did as young men in the cause of freedom," said Judge Grout, Jr., one of the Korean War veterans. The Korean War began on June 25, 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea. The United Nations, with the United States as the principal force, came to aid South Korea.  China came to aid North Korea. The war ceased on July 27, 1953 when an Armistice Agreement was signed and a Korean Demilitarized Zone was established to separate the North and South Korea. No peace treaty has been signed. South Korea is still home of the US Forces Korea (USFK). Casualties of the Korean War were heavy. The U.S. losses were placed at over  54,000 dead and 103,000 wounded. About 80,176 soldiers from Louisiana served in the Korean War, with 588 causalities.
The Korean War Memorial Monuments were erected by the Louisiana Chapter of the Korean War Association and dedicated on Nov. 10, 1996."The Korean American Association of New Orleans has been hosting the Korean War Memorial Service annually in front of the memorial monuments that honors the Korean War soldiers who lost their lives in the battle. I always look forward to attending the event and getting to meet our veterans from this war. It's always an honor for me just to be there to say 'thank you' in person," Lee-Sheng said.

"We are honored to present the Korean War Memorial to remember all the veterans who fought the Korean War," Park said.

On behalf of KAANO, Park "invites everyone to attend the memorial service to honor the veterans."
