Cecil J. Murphy Jr., Sergeant Major of Marines, USMC (Retired) died Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Touro Infirmary. He was 82 years of age. Sgt.
Major Murphy was born in New Orleans. He graduated from Jesuit High School, and received a bachelor's degree in political administration from Upper Iowa University. He retired from the Marine Corps after serving 31 years and is a veteran of Korea and Vietnam.
He had served 24 years with the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana as a Deputy Clerk. He received commendation for valor from Korea and Vietnam along with the Korean medal w/3 campaign stars, the Vietnam medal w/6 campaign stars and 13 other medals and awards. He was bestowed with the Order of the Rising Sun Gold & Silver Rays by the Emperor of Japan in 2009.
He was a LIFE MEMBER of the Marine Corps Association, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Marine Division Associations, American Legion Post, Okinawa, VFW Post 8973. He was a member of Marine Corps League, Fleet Reserve Association, Secretary St. Alphonsus Pastoral council, Past President St. Alphonsus Credit Union, A member of Men of Manresa (Jesuit), Ancient Order of Hiberians, St. Pat's Irish Channel March Club, Past Secretary Asian Pacific American Society, Past President Japan Club of New Orleans, Past President Kokusai International Toastmasters.
Beloved husband of Kiku Murphy. Father of Patrick J. Murphy. Father in law of Sayuri. Son of the late Cecil J. Murphy Sr. and Barbara Lillian Curry Murphy. Brother of Bernadette Murphy, Patricia Garvey, James G. Murphy, William J.N. Murphy and the late Barbara Rizzo, Marie Nelson and Kathleen I. Garvey. Grandfather of Patrick Ryuma and Michael Ryusei.
