Jack M. Sands, age 85 years, died at his Metairie home on Saturday, July 10, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Martha Rosen Sands. Devoted father of Alan Sands, Marc Sands (EllenAnn) and Lee (Jennifer) Sands.  Grandfather of Schuyler Sands, Sam Sands, Michael Sands and Aleksei Sands. Uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents Abe and Ella Sawilowsky and his sister Goldie Sawilowsky Ungar.

Jack was a lifetime resident of New Orleans.  He joined the United State Marine Corps after graduation from Alcee Fortier High School. He was a Korean War Veteran and served as an MP and as General Bradley’s aide. He was a founder of the New Orleans Marine Support Group and through his tireless efforts the Marine Support Group became one of the largest support groups in the United States.

Jack’s career as an entrepreneur was varied and consisted of insurance, Good Lickin Ice Cream, Park Place Property and Tavern on the Park Restaurant which was awarded placement on both the National and Louisiana State list of Historic Places.

He was a founding member of the Louisiana Wildlife Carvers Guild, a 50 year member of Jefferson Lodge, F.A.&M as well as a a member of the New Orleans Valley of the Scottish Rite.He was very active in many civic and social organizations including the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation.

Graveside services will be held Monday, July 11, 2016 at 3:00 PM in Jewish Burial Rites Cemetery,4321 Frenchman Street with Rabbi Nemes officiating.   In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Wounded Warriors Project.                                         Condolences may be expressed online at www.tharpsontheimerfh.com.
